Coire Na Creiche

Moody winter skies lend a fitting atmosphere over this classic Scottish landscape. In 1601, the last clan battle on Skye was fought here, after a year of feuding between Clan MacLeod of Dunvegan and the Clan MacDonald of Sleat.

A sobering aspect of visiting Skye is the obvious toll that tourism is taking on this beautiful island. The permanent population is 10,000 but the estimated visitor numbers in 2017 were over 170,000. For a photographer, that may mean unwelcome crowds at popular locations and unwanted figures in my shots, but for the locals and the land itself, it means far more. Narrow roads are choked with cars, campers and buses. Littering and other disrespectful behaviour is sadly an issue too, as many folk seem to want to wreck the very beauty that drew them here.
